Sharma joins the U.S. advisory group to shape international governance frameworks for artificial intelligence, reinforcing American leadership in technical standardization.
Rohan Sharma, a globally recognized authority on AI governance and a 2025 Aspen Institute Civic AI Leader, has been appointed to the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). In this capacity, Sharma will represent U.S. interests in the development of ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 42, the premier international committee responsible for establishing foundational standards for artificial intelligence, including safety, trustworthiness, and risk management. This appointment positions Sharma at the forefront of the geopolitical effort to harmonize technical protocols across borders, ensuring that emerging AI systems remain interoperable, secure, and aligned with democratic values.
As nations race to codify rules for algorithmic accountability, the U.S. TAG serves as the critical interface between American innovation and global regulatory consensus. Sharma’s selection brings deep private-sector expertise and policy acumen to the delegation, bridging the gap between high-level governance principles and actionable engineering constraints. His work will focus on defining robust frameworks for AI quality, bias mitigation, and the certification of autonomous systems critical to national infrastructure.
“The fragmentation of digital standards poses a systemic risk to global economic stability and innovation,” said Rohan Sharma. “Effective governance requires a lexicon that is technically precise and universally intelligible. By establishing rigorous, consensus-based standards at the ISO level, we create the necessary guardrails for enterprise and government adoption while ensuring that safety does not come at the expense of sovereignty.”
This appointment expands Sharma’s existing portfolio of leadership in technology policy, which includes his role as Lead of the Law Sub-committee for the ACM Technology Policy Committee and his contributions as an Agenda Contributor to the World Economic Forum. As governments increasingly mandate compliance with ISO standards for procurement and deployment, Sharma’s involvement ensures that forthcoming regulations reflect the complexities of modern enterprise environments, a subject he explored extensively in his Springer-published text, AI & the Boardroom.
“We are moving past the era of theoretical ethics into the phase of technical enforcement,” Sharma added. “The standards we draft today will dictate the operational realities of global markets for the next decade. It is imperative that these frameworks facilitate trust and transparency, enabling organizations to deploy critical AI systems with confidence in their compliance and reliability.”
